Accessibility Review: Garden Park GRAMADO

Posted on March 26, 2024March 27, 2024 by geordiet

Garden Park Gramado is a wonderful little nature spot on the outskirts of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul. It’s positioned near the bottom of a large hill, less than 2km from the Bueno Vitta Gramado Hotel, which can be found by turning off the main road out of Gramado city center and heading north.

It’s truly a unique place, exceptionally well maintained and full of beautiful trees and flowers that naturally complement the stunning landscape surrounding it. A smooth pathway leads you through various sections of the garden, culminating in an impressive natural waterfall display as you near the end.

In terms of accessibility, most of the park is wheelchair accessible, however, there are many places with incredibly steep inclines. The park does offer the option to rent a mobility scooter, but this comes at a cost of over R$ 120,00, which at the time of writing is around $24, €22, or £19.

The Good Access at Garden Park Gramado

There is a disabled parking space right nex to the entrance. Disabled guests can enter the park for free. Large areas of the park are wheelchair accessible, with smooth pathways mixed with the occasional patch of gravel which is also accessible with a wheelchair (it is the type of gravel which is not too difficult to roll over). There is also a spacious accessible bathroom with some grab bars to hold onto (although the accessible bathroom remains fairly basic and certainly does not cater for those with extensive mobility needs).

The Bad Access at Garden Park Gramado

Some areas of the park are inaccessible, for example, the trail that follows the river is extremely uneven and is accessed via several large stone steps. Parts of the Garden Park are extremely hilly and manual wheelchair users will likely need assistance to reach the top. At the end of the main trail there is a decked area which is full of picnic tables. The area is tricky to get onto as there is a large gap between the pathway leading down to the decked area, and the decking itself. The decked area is also the only place where wheelchair users can enjoy the views of the waterfull. These views would be largely impeded if the decked area were to be full of guests at the time of your visit.
